FMGE / NEXT — Your Complete Guide

Everything you need to know about passing the FMGE or NEXT exam to practice medicine in India after completing your MBBS abroad — plus our expert coaching support.

What is FMGE?

The Foreign Medical Graduates Examination (FMGE) is a mandatory screening test conducted by the National Board of Examinations (NBE) for Indian nationals who have completed their primary medical qualification (MBBS) from a medical institution outside India and wish to obtain provisional or permanent registration to practice medicine in India.

  • Conducted twice a year — June & December
  • 300 MCQs covering all medical subjects
  • Passing marks: 150/300 (50%)
  • No negative marking
  • Duration: 3.5 hours (CBT mode)

FMGE is currently the licensing examination. Passing FMGE grants you provisional registration from the NMC/State Medical Council to practice in India.

What is NEXT?

The National Exit Test (NEXT) is the upcoming unified medical licensing examination that will replace both FMGE (for foreign graduates) and the traditional MBBS final-year examinations. It aims to standardise and equalise the licensing process for all medical graduates — Indian and foreign alike.

  • Replaces FMGE for foreign graduates
  • Two parts: NEXT Step 1 (theory) & Step 2 (clinical)
  • Single examination for all MBBS graduates
  • Scores used for PG admissions (replacing NEET PG)
  • Implementation expected by 2026–2027

Our FMGE coaching programs are already updated with NEXT-aligned curriculum so our students are fully prepared for whichever system is active when they graduate.

Preparation Strategy

A proven step-by-step strategy to clear FMGE/NEXT on your first attempt.

1

Start Early — From Year 1

The students who clear FMGE consistently are those who treat their MBBS curriculum seriously from Day 1. Don't wait until you're back in India — build strong conceptual foundations during your 6 years abroad. Attend all classes and engage actively in clinical postings.

2

Know the Syllabus Thoroughly

FMGE covers 19 subjects — Anatomy, Physiology, Biochemistry, Pathology, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Forensic Medicine, SPM, Medicine, Surgery, Obs & Gynae, Paediatrics, Ophthalmology, ENT, Dermatology, Psychiatry, Radiology, Anaesthesia, and Orthopaedics.

3

Standard Reference Books

Follow the standard Indian MBBS reference books for each subject — Robbins (Pathology), Rang & Dale (Pharmacology), Harrison's (Medicine), Dutta (ObGyn). These books are aligned with the FMGE syllabus and MCQ pattern far better than foreign textbooks.

4

Join a Structured Coaching Program

Self-study alone rarely beats FMGE. Joining a structured coaching program (like ours) ensures systematic coverage, expert guidance, and most importantly — exposure to the type of clinical-scenario based MCQs that appear in FMGE. Start coaching 6 months before your exam.

5

Practice MCQs Relentlessly

FMGE is an MCQ-based exam. You must practice at least 5,000–8,000 MCQs before appearing. Focus on previous years' papers — FMGE repeats many concepts and question types. Our test series includes 15+ full-length mock tests based on the actual FMGE pattern.

6

Revision is Key

FMGE tests recall under time pressure. With 300 questions in 210 minutes, you have less than 1 minute per question. Quick recall comes only from multiple revisions. Prepare concise notes for each subject. Revise at least 3 times before the exam for highest retention.

FMGE / NEXT FAQs

There is no limit on the number of attempts for FMGE. You can appear as many times as needed until you clear it. However, it is advisable to prepare thoroughly before each attempt rather than appearing without adequate preparation. With our structured coaching, most students clear FMGE within 1–2 attempts.

Ideally, FMGE preparation should begin from your final year of MBBS abroad — at least 12 months before your intended exam date. For best results, begin laying foundations from Year 3–4 of MBBS by following Indian reference books alongside your curriculum. The last 6 months should be intensive coaching with mock tests.

Yes. After clearing FMGE and completing a 1-year internship from a recognised Indian hospital, you are eligible to appear for NEET PG (or NEXT Step 2 when implemented). FMGE clearance plus internship completion gives you the full provisional/permanent registration needed to pursue postgraduate medical studies in India.

If you don't clear FMGE in one attempt, you can re-appear in the next cycle (typically 6 months later). You cannot practice in India until you clear the exam. Many students use the gap period to enroll in coaching, strengthen their weak subjects, and appear again with better preparation. There is no shame in re-attempting — what matters is eventual success.

Yes, the National Exit Test (NEXT) is designed to eventually replace both FMGE (for foreign graduates) and the traditional final-year MBBS examinations in India. The exact implementation timeline is still being finalised by the NMC. Until NEXT is officially implemented, FMGE remains the valid licensing examination. We keep all our students updated on any regulatory changes.
